Flu and cold season is here. In addition to these common viruses, there’s COVID-19 and several chronic health conditions that put your parent’s health at risk. If your mom or dad is sick, what should you be doing to help them get well?

Make Sure Your Parent Drinks Water

Homecare Tamarac FL – Cold, Flu, or Another Illness: Care Tips for a Sick Parent

It’s important that your mom or dad drinks plenty of water. It can be hard to stay hydrated when you’re sick. You don’t want to get up and get something or wake up enough to drink more water. Water also helps keep mucus flowing, so it’s doubly important.

Rather than force your parent to get up and move around, fill a large bottle or pitcher with ice water and have it on an end table. When another drink is needed, it’s right there.

Stock up on fruit juice popsicles, too. Make your own using an ice cube tray and natural fruit juice or fruit puree. Instead of a drink, your mom or dad could suck on some frozen fruit juice or puree instead. In addition to water, fruit juice also has antioxidants like vitamin C.

The other way to make sure your mom or dad stays hydrated is by making a big pot of soup. Homemade chicken broth made with vegetables like celery, carrots, kale, and onions is good. Add matzo balls for a heartier meal. Make an easy vegetable soup with frozen mixed vegetables, vegetable broth, and a can of diced tomatoes.

Know When to Call a Doctor

Most viruses don’t require a doctor’s visit. If there’s a fever, a very congested cough, or chest pain, make sure you talk to a doctor. You don’t want the flu or a bad chest cold progressing into pneumonia.

If the illness is a chronic health condition like heart disease or diabetes, work with a doctor to make sure your parent is following the doctor’s orders. Prescriptions, diet, and exercise are usually important steps to take in keeping the condition from worsening.

Live Too Far Away to Help Regularly?

Some families are in different corners of the world. Military service or job transfers may have you located on the other side of the globe. If you’re a long-distance caregiver, homecare services help you make sure your mom or dad are supported during an illness.

Arrange homecare services by calling our agency, discussing what care your parent needs, and scheduling caregiver visits. It’s easy to do and gives you the peace of mind you need when you’re not close.
