Many seniors live daily with multiple medical conditions. Those medical conditions can range from minor irritations, such as dry skin, to major illnesses such as diabetes or cancer. Not feeling 100 percent can knock the wind out of anyone’s sails, and many times, there is not much that can be done about it.
For health conditions that are ongoing or chronic, your elderly loved one might find some relief and improved quality of life if she not only follows the doctor’s recommendations for treatment but also starts making some important changes at home and in how she approaches each day. Changes are never easy, especially when combined with trying to manage multiple medical conditions, but with support and encouragement, your loved one will have a better chance at success.
Let’s look at four steps to healthier living at home (always talk with your loved one’s doctor before implementing any changes and to get advice on what will work best for your loved one).
Eat Better for Better Health
It’s not news that what your loved one eats will have a direct impact on her health. Fortunately, for many people, a healthy diet looks similar and doesn’t require a vast knowledge of how to make specialty foods or even a large budget.
If your loved one has a lifetime of bad eating habits, start small by substituting some unhealthy food for healthier food. Try to reduce the amount of processed food she eats with fresh food, or work on reducing her sodium intake if that’s a concern.
Exercise More for More Energy
When a person is out of shape and exhausted all the time, it’s hard to imagine that exercise will produce more energy in them. With exercise, the blood flows better, more oxygen is absorbed into the body, and muscles get stronger. Even small daily walks can help if your loved one is not used to regularly being active.
Help your loved one find an activity she enjoys, and then, if possible, assist with finding someone to join her or check in with her regularly to make sure she’s staying consistent with her activity.
Restful Sleep Makes the Mind More Alert
Many seniors struggle with getting a good night’s rest. From pain that wakes them up at night to bad sleep hygiene habits, they can struggle with ever getting the sleep they need to stay sharp during the day. A lack of good sleep can make it difficult to make decisions, follow simple instructions, or remember where the keys are.
Take some time to review where your loved one sleeps. Is it set up for a good night’s sleep with proper soundproofing, a good way to block out light, and a comfortable sleeping area? Also, talk to your loved one about what she does before bedtime each night to help her avoid bad habits like too much screen time or caffeine before bed.
Reduce Stress for Improved Health
Finally, if your loved one is bothered by daily stress, help her find some healthy ways to manage her stress levels. It can be anything from going for a daily walk to practicing yoga to talking to a caring person who will listen without judgment.
Stress affects how we eat, our energy levels, and how we sleep, so if your loved one can tackle her stress levels, she’ll be more successful in the other areas as well.
