October 19-25 is Respiratory Care Week. During this week there will be many activities and programs to raise awareness about respiratory care. The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) will be promoting awareness of health issues relating to lungs. There will also be celebrations giving credit to the work respiratory care professionals do around the country as well as world-wide. Respiratory Care Week was first established in 1982.

  • Eat a diet rich in the nutrients your respiratory system needs. Low levels of the following vitamins and minerals have been linked to some of the lung diseases: vitamins A, C, E and zinc, potassium, magnesium, and selenium so make sure you are eating foods high in these nutrients.
  • Water is necessary to thin the mucus secretions. You will breathe easier when you stay hydrated. Make sure to drink at least 6.5 cups of water daily. Some experts recommend 8. Those with bigger body sizes may need more 8 cups because they have more cells to hydrate.
  • House plants improve the quality of your household air. They can remove chemical vapors that could be harmful to your respiratory health as well as improve the oxygen levels in your home, according to the British Columbia Lung Association.
