Elder Care in Lighthouse Point FL

National Immunization Month is observed every August to encourage people of all ages to become properly vaccinated.  While many people think of vaccinations as something meant for the very Elder-Care-in-Lighthouse-Point-FLyoung, the truth is that there are many vaccinations that elderly adults should get, as well.  Vaccinations for the elderly can help them to have better quality of life and lower their risk for developing certain diseases that can compromise their health.  August is a great month for caregivers to review their elderly loved one’s immunization record and make sure their immunizations are up to date.  If they are not, it is also a good time to schedule appointments for your loved one to get them.  Read on for a list of important immunizations for older adults and why they are a great idea to get.

Influenza

Getting an influenza vaccine (or flu shot) every year before flu season begins (in the fall) is very important for elderly adults.  Since elderly adults have a weakened immune system, they can be more at risk for getting the flu virus and for suffering from complications of the flu that can, in some cases, even be life-threatening.  In order to be effective, your loved one must get the influenza vaccine each year.

Tdap and Td Booster

If your loved one was not vaccinated for whooping cough (pertussis), they should get the Tdap vaccine.  In addition, they will need a Td booster every 10 years to protect them from tetanus and diphtheria.  These vaccines are recommended by the CDC for adults of all ages.

Zoster Vaccine

Adults over the age of 60 who had chicken pox as children should get the zoster vaccine to protect them from shingles.  Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a rash that forms on one side of the body and it can be very painful.  In some cases, the pain can last for months or years after the rash has healed.  Shingles can reduce an elderly adult’s quality of life which is why it is important for elderly adults to be vaccinated for shingles.

Pneumococcal Vaccines

This vaccine can protect your loved one against pneumococcal diseases and lung infections.  It is recommended for all adults over the age of 65 as well as adults who may be younger than 65, but who have certain chronic health conditions.  Pneumococcal diseases are serious disease that can even be life-threatening in some cases.
